Republicans Throw Tantrum Over Having To Work on The Weekend

WASHINGTON : Howls of protest filled the halls of the U.S. Senate today as dozens of Senators expressed their outrage at having to work through the weekend to save the United States from financial Armageddon.

“We’re hearing a lot about the country plunging back into recession and millions of people being thrown out of work,” said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky). “What we’re not hearing much about is how our Sunday is being completely and irrevocably ruined.”

Now That's A Really Big Shark

The Mammoth Megalodon, A Shark About 30 Times the Size of a Great White

The (Carcharodon) Megalodon is thought to have looked something like a Great White Shark, only a bit more stocky and overall bigger… much bigger,

with an average adult Megalodon estimated to have weighed around 70-100 tons (about 30 times that of a Great White Shark which full grown tend to be about 2.5-3 tons).  The Megalodon is estimated to have been around 15-24 meters long (50-78 ft., compared to a typical adult Great White Shark which is only 6m or 20 ft long).  It is also estimated that the bite force the Megalodon’s jaws could generate was somewhere in the vicinity of 108,514 N – 182,201 N (11-18 tons of force).  For reference, this is about 6-10 times the biting power of a Great White Shark and 18-30 times that of a Lion.

Could Iowa City Rank In he Top Ten Cities For Singles?

If your answer is yes, you are correct!

Finding the best cities for singles goes beyond simply identifying the places with the highest percentage of bachelors and bachelorettes. Financial factors count, too. After all, you’ll want to meet someone who can afford to date, right?

To put together a list of best cities for singles, taken into account were income and living costs. The cities that made the final cut boast household income levels well above the Census Bureau average of $49,536. The cost-of-living score -- derived from Council for Community and Economic Research data -- indicates essential costs, including rent. A high score is acceptable as long as it’s offset by attractive incomes and a strong dating pool.

Cities were screened based on the percentage of unmarried households because many otherwise great places to live are heavily populated by happily wedded couples, not swinging singles. And the cities were limited by unmarried households comfortably above the average of 49.4%.

Finally, added was what was dubbed a date-night tab: the average cost of two movie tickets plus a bottle of wine. Use the amount to budget for your next night out. Take a tour of the top-10 cities for singles.

Mayan Calendar Revisited-Yields New Forecast

News Flash-World Didn't End

If you are reading this, then the world didn't end on December 21.

News Flash # 2: The Mayan's Never "Predicted" the world would end on December 21, 2012.

The scenario is not entirely different from the old example of telling a short story to the first person in a line of people.

Each person then turns around and whispers it to the next person, who then turns, and so on. By the time the story reaches the last person in line, the original story is often wildly differnt than the original version.

I remember first hearing the story about the Mayan calendar a few years ago.

The original version went something like this:

The Mayan calendar will be recycling into a new period in 2012. Each period is called a "baktun."

Each baktun represents 144,000 days — or nearly 400 years. The 13th baktun of the Mayan calendar is slated to come to an end on the solstice marked on Dec. 21, 2012.

The years will simply click-over and start a new cycle.  Similarly, if a car's odometer runs past its complement of numbers, you can still drive it.

Compare this story to today's madness, early school closings, families teaching their young children to wear gas masks, and many, many other outrageous stories.

Never underestimate the sheer zaniness of some segments of our population. And enjoy thr rest of your day.

Keep in mind that "Life's Journey is the Reward, not the destination."

There's no less than 10 jillion articles on the internet these days titled "What is the Fiscal Cliff?". Unfortunately, almost none actually answer the question.
Here is the simple answer.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke came up with the term “fiscal cliff” while urging
Congress to avoid a steep dropoff (as in "cliff")for the economy at the end of 2012 thanks to tax increases and automatic budget cuts.

If you want to find out more about it, please read any of the aforementioned articles.

Why Are Barns Red?

Have you ever thought about it? Why are most barns painted red?
History suggests that as barns came into existence, when planning a barn, weather and how it would affect the barn was a major consideration. Building a barn was a major undertaking for the farmer. It involved a huge commitment of labor and finances. It only stands to reason that a farmer or rancher would attempt to protect this significant outlay of time and money.
Early builders of farms took into consideration many factors. In addition to the health and welfare of his animals and stored harvest, the early farmer noted the direction of water runoff and drainage, the direction of sunlight and wind patterns. Equally important was the preservation of the barn’s wooden timbers.
Early thinking considered the type of wood and its placement to be critical and the prevailing thought at the time was that wooden structures needed no paint. As the 1700’s began, barns, wooden bridges, and houses in the early settlements were not painted. It was thought that natural, unpreserved “seasoning” of the wood was satisfactory.
As the century progressed, by the late 1700’s, the practice of wood seasoning gave way to artificial methods of preservation. Paint was becoming the new law of the land. Virginia farmers paved the way for considering paint as a means of protection from the elements. And in Pennsylvania, Dutch settlers began using the color red. It is uncertain whether, at the time, the color red was just a fad or if the use of red had more practical purposes. It is apparently fact that red paint was the lowest price paint available at the time until the invention of “white wash”.
The Dutch, by custom, favored red for use in bricks, flower geraniums, barns and even reddish brown cows.
On the practical side, it was discovered that red paint, when combined with linseed oil would prevent certain contaminants and from subjecting wood to decay. Some farmers also added red blood from slaughter animals to the paint and as the paint dried, the color changed from a bright red to a darker burnt red. The exact reasoning for addition of blood remains unclear.
Ferrous oxide or rust was found to be a toxic poison for fungus such as mold, mildew, and moss which grew on the barns and decay the wood. Since rust was plentiful on the farm it soon became the practice to add it to the paint used to coat barns, again the color of rust contributed and preserved the continuing tradition of red.
It is also said that red barn became a fashionable thing that contrasted well with traditional white farmhouses.
